Canterbury high street was seen to be rather busy during the launch, with the queue at Game stretching out across the street with fans waiting excitedly in line for a copy of their game, and one witness said that the queue in ASDA stretched across the large supermarket.
Gamers were pumped up for the release, with one of many fans, Rowan Glover, 21, saying “I’m going to pull an ‘all-nighter’ for this game”. Walking through the town centre, you could see some running down the street, eager to play the game, which they had paid around 45 pounds for, and cars driving around with the chant of “Black Ops! Black Ops” coming out of the windows with the eager fans heads.
Why the excitement for a game? This is because the Call of Duty franchise is one of the top 10 biggest selling game series of all time, and responsible for some of the highest selling games of the current generation of games consoles, and praised by many for its superior multiplayer system on Playstation Network and Xbox Live and the return of popular game mode ‘Nazi Zombies’.
Some fans were left disappointed though, with one fan coming away empty handed. Liam Sutton, 20, said “I waited for ages in line, and found out they had run out of stock, why did they not realize this game was going to be a big seller”.
Black Ops has proven to be a big seller, selling 5.6 million copies in the UK and North America in its first 24 hours, making it the biggest game launch of all time, beating its predecessor Modern Warfare 2, which sold 4.7 million on its first day of release.
Canterbury entertainment shops seemed to have fulfilled at least most of the demand for the sought after game, and helps lift developing giant Activisions’ bank balance that much higher. Did anyone go to this launch, or any other launch for that matter? If so, what was your thoughts on it, what's been your favourite one?
